Ever stood in front of an overflowing wardrobe and realize you still having nothing to wear? No matter how many statement pieces you’re putting together it just doesn’t feel right. And obviously it’s not like you can walk out wearing something basic. That’s not you. You’re the one with a shopping problem and yet having nothing to wear problem. Okay jokes aside, have you heard of the cliché ‘that when you have too many choices you often make the bad ones?’ Hey I don’t make the rules…I’m mad about it too. But honestly? this is kind of true and I see it when my outfit just doesn’t work no matter how many trendy pieces I have on.

Sometimes the skirt is just not right or the top doesn’t have the fitting required for my loose jeans. It’s close to the outfit I had in my head but it just doesn’t look the same, you know?

It’s okay happens to the best of us shopaholic fashionistas. It’s either too many choices spoiling us or sometimes you’re just not finding the right vibe for the day.

As a sustainable shopaholic I have a few tricks up my sleeve that help me maintain a good wardrobe that automatically evolves with trends and my personal style. I definitely don’t believe in having a minimal capsule wardrobe but I do believe in one thing — a cohesive wardrobe.

A wardrobe where whatever piece I pick goes with another piece I have on. This is how I make it work even on days when I have no time and most my clothes are in the laundry basket. It’s actually a trick I learned from an amazing fashion blogger, mother to three and someone who has been in the game for a long- long time. I have never seen her dress anything but appropriately. She repeats her pieces which made me start noticing that she played around restyling things a lot. It wasn’t until she offhandedly mentioned the rule she follows while shopping. It was simple — whenever you’re buying an item make sure it goes with at-least 3 other items in your wardrobe! Ha! What a eureka moment right.

You just have to make sure that the pretty blouse you’re about to purchase will go with those pants that you bought last month and still haven’t worn. Yes, also that skirt? That’s just been sitting there waiting it’s turn…maybe it will finally get to have a go too? Shop a lot my shopaholic besties but remember to be a conscious consumer. The simple idea of keeping in mind the things you already have and how they will pair up with the things you wanna buy will make your wardrobe so much cohesive. Pretty soon there won’t be a single item that doesn’t go with something else and you’ll be making an outfit that gives wardrobe chic with your eyes closed.

A lot of times when I suggest creating a cohesive wardrobe people will generally confuse it with buying only basics and creating a capsule style wardrobe. You can for sure go big and get that halter neck top you’ve always wanted but make sure it goes with that skirt and jeans sitting pretty patiently in your wardrobe too. These pieces don’t have to be super basic at all. They just have to go well with at-least three existing pieces in your wardrobe. That’s not asking a lot. I promise you this will make your life and getting dressed in the morning so much easier. Honestly, this practice helped me develop my own personal style as well. I stopped buying trendy pieces that I would have to buy more trendy pieces for, just to make an outfit that I’d wear till that seasons trends remained.

This tip is also for my low-budget shopaholic besties. You can keep a track on your spending and create some boundaries with your purchases. And honestly, it doesn’t matter how many new pieces of clothing and items you buy that season if your wardrobe is not cohesively catering to your personal style you will never be able to create original and classy looks. Just ask yourself…will this go with three other pieces in my wardrobe?
